Abstract

396,405. Compound sheet materials. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(General Electric Co. ; Schenectady, New York, U.S.A.) Feb. 2, 1932, No. 3128. [Class 140.] A moulded laminated material which is relatively bullet proof comprises alternate layers of fibrous material and of an abrasive such as glass or quartz in powdered form, the layers being bonded together with a resinous composition or a varnish capable of hardening when heated and subjected to pressure. For instance, a number of sheets of glass-paper are impregnated with a synthetic resin or with a varnish containing bonding media such as bitumen or albumen, and are subjected to heat and pressure to bond them. Alternatively, a layer of powdered glass, quartz or carborundum mixed with a powdered synthetic resin may be enclosed between two sheets of paper or fabric and subjected to heat and pressure. Several layers of powdered abrasive and several sheets of paper &c. may be used, the paper being impregnated with synthetic resin. The material may be moulded into sheet form, or may be moulded on to metal or other materials to form a protective covering. Specification 281,711, [Class 70, Indiarubber &c.], is referred to.
