Abstract

A machine for helically winding an endless core with strip material, e.g. for making an endless V-belt, comprises driving and driven sheaves for tensioning the core, a tensioning mechanism fixed to the driven sheave for this purpose and a helically winding device for applying the strip and consisting of a toothed wheel with a radial slot to permit the core piece to be introduced into the centre of the toothed wheel; on one face of this toothed wheel, a holder for feeding the spool of strip is mounted at an angle to the rotational axis of the wheel. The toothed wheel and winding mechanism are mounted on a travelling carriage which can move along the bed of the machine relative to the driving sheave and which comprises a hollow shaft having a longitudinal slot to permit the core to be wound to be introduced into this hollow shaft; the radial slit in the shaft and the radial slit in the toothed wheel are aligned for this purpose. The toothed wheel is rotationally driven by >=2 pinions which have points of contact with the pitch circle of the toothed wheel sepd. by a distance which exceeds the gap of the slit in the toothed wheel, thus enabling the toothed wheel to be continuously driven from its perimeter.
