Abstract

An axially movable feed screw mounted in a barrel feeds melt through the barrel to an extrusion nozzle provided with a valve, and between the end of the barrel and the extrusion nozzle is provided an accumulation chamber in which an axially bored non-return piston is slidable which has a diameter greater than that of the barrel. With the extrusion nozzle closed the feed screw feeds melt through the bore in the piston into the accumulation chamber whereby the pressure of the melt in the accumulation chamber forces the piston towards the feed screw and into the barrel. When the accumulation chamber is full the extrusion nozzle is opened and the feed screw is moved axially so that a conical tip of the feed screw blocks the bore in the piston and so that the piston is pressed into the accumulation chamber to force the melt through the extrusion nozzle. The quantity of melt which can be extruded is increased although extrusion pressures are slightly reduced.
