Abstract

A plastic cup formed from a thin disc (e.g. 3/10 mm thick) which has been cold formed to provide a peripheral skirt 5-200 mm deep is located over the mouth of a pref. sterilized container filled with liquid, and the cap is heated (pref. in a direction from the lower edge of the skirt to the upper edge) by e.g. a hot air jet at 240 degrees C to produce a preliminary contraction after which cap tightens the skirt around the upper edge of the container. Pref. the skirt is then cooled by cold air whilst the flat part of the cap is heated with hot air at 240 degrees C) to contract it so that it is tensioned and pressed against the lip of the container mouth. Pref. the flat part of the cap and skirt are subsequently cooled by cold air. The method is suitable for an automated process for sealing containers having large mouths.
