Abstract

Prodn. of a reducing gas by (a) mixing a hydrocarbon-contg. gas contg. >=1 of butane, butene, ethane, ethylene and propane, preheated to below its decompsn. temp., with a gas contg. CO2 and H2O, preheated to >1130 degrees C, in a reforming furnace; and (b) heating the gas mixt. to >1200 degrees C and keeping it at this temp. The hydrocarbon-contg. gas is pref. a by-prod. from petroleum refining, and the gas contg. CO2 and H2O is pref. the waste gas from a redn. furnace, esp. a blast furance for iron smelting.
