Abstract

Gas mixtures are quenched by leading them into a quenching vessel through an inlet pipe which opens into the vessel below the level of a quenching liquid; at least that part of the inlet pipe which is inside the quenching vessel is surrounded by a layer of insulating material. Deposition of tar and carbon on the inner wall of the inlet pipe is reduced or completely avoided. As a result, the appts. can be kept in operation for a longer time. The process is used for hydrocarbons of bpt is not >450 degrees C at atmos. pressure and the inner wall of the inlet is at >=500 degrees C.
