Abstract
1395864 Heat-treating rods GRANGES ENG AB 26 Feb 1973 [29 Feb 1972] 9330/73 Heading C7N A process for heat-treating steel rods whilst substantially eliminating surface oxidation or decarburization, utilizes a gas-tight furnace 10 and infeed and outfeed chambers 11, 12 for the passage of the rods. Rods are fed through infeed chamber 11 into the furnace 10, moving along rollers 20, and when sufficiently heated are pushed by means 23 along beams 22 to rollers 21 on the other side of the furnace from where they can be removed through outfeed chamber 12. The furnace is heated by elements (13), Fig. 1 (not shown) or any other means where fuel is not combusted in the furnace space 15. The furnace space 15 can be maintained at a slightly higher pressure than the surroundings by using commercial N2. To prevent the entry of air into the furnace space, the atmosphere around the rods in the chambers 11, 12 is flushed out either with gas, i.e. N2, from the furnace, or with similar gas introduced through pipes 33.
