Abstract
Plant for the bright annealing of bars or tubes made of steel contg. Cr and opt. Ni, e.g. stainless steels, uses a roller hearth furnace followed by a chamber for rapid cooling; a protective atmos. with a high hydrogen content is used in both the cooling chamber and the furnace. The inlet end of the furnace is fitted with an air lock, and a second air lock is provided on the outlet end of the cooling chamber; both air locks can be evacuated, or filled with the protective gas or nitrogen; the various items of plant are assembled in a row using air-tight joints; and appts. is used for the regeneration and recirculation of the protective gas. The plant can be employed for either continuous- or batch-annealing. An inexpensive process is provided, using the min. amt. of costly protective gas, esp. when a annealing tubes with bore above 100 mm. dia.
