Abstract

Soluble carbohydrates are produced by contacting a cell tissue with an aqs. and liquid to form an extract which is then treated with a compsn. contg. an acid, an inorg. substance and/or a cellulosic prod. and converting the extract to a solid shaped prod. e.g. by casting, spinning etc. and drying. Pref. the cell tissue is of vegetable origin. The dried extract is used in prodn. of tobacco substitute and cigarette fillers. Pref. prior to solidification the extract is pregelled e.g. by a Ca salt.
