Abstract

An underwater electric arc welding process in which water is prevented from entering the enclosed feed unit, the arc and the weld zone by a high pressure shielding gas supplied to the feed unit. The gas, which may be air inert gas or CO2, is at a higher pressure than the water pressure and is ejected from the feed unit as an envelope around the arc. An inner and outer coaxial envelope may be applied to the arc, pref. via conduits surrounding the wire and welding nozzle. The feed unit, wire supply wled nozzle and supply conduits may be enclosed in water tight conduits which are pressurised with the shielding gas.
