Abstract

Dye is supplied from a reservoir to a nozzle arranged within a perforated printing roller by a pump driven by a variable speed motor controlled in dependence on the rotational speed of the printing roller and the feed rate of the web being printed, and the motor drives the pump via a speed change assembly (pref. an epicyclic gear) and a clutch (pref. electromagnet), the clutch being brought into and out of operation by a manually operated switch in the clutch control circuit so as to control supply of dye to the nozzle. Pref. the nozzle includes a piston responsive to changes in pressure in the nozzle and operative either to control a pressure indicator or a limit switch in the clutch control circuit, the limit switch being operative to actuate or de-actuate the clutch. Supply of dye to the nozzle can be accurately controlled to provide the pressure necessary for printing.
