Abstract
A tower for contacting gas with a spray of particles, (esp. for cooling fumes contaminated with dust prior to electrostatic precipitation, by direct mixing with water which is to be completely converted to vapour), has a top entry where the gas is to be evenly distributed, pref. by use of throttling valves, between, e.g. 7 vertical pipes fitted between a distribution chamber and the tower. Pipes may have venturi constrictions, spray nozzles being fitted where pipes enlarge to meet top of tower. Gas flow is made uniform without appreciable pressure drop and spray distribution is effective, so that economical tower size is possible. Maintenance is simplified and dust deposits are minimal.
