Abstract
<PICT:0773096/III/1> An apparatus for separating gas from crude oil issuing from an oil well and comprising a long horizontal or sloping vessel having an inlet for oil containing gas at one end and separate exits for oil and gas at the other, is characterized by the provision of a heating element in such a position that foam produced in said vessel comes into contact with said element. In Fig. 1, crude oil from a high-pressure oil well enters a long inclined cylindrical vessel 10 through a valve 14, in which foam is formed as a result of the decrease in pressure, and through a nozzle 16, by which the foam is directed on to a plate 18 to effect partial separation. The foam remaining passes along the vessel 10 until it meets an electrically heated wire grid 20 which intercepts the foam, causing it to break, but is out of contact with the oil. It is possible to have several separators operating at successively lower pressures. It is stated that 300 DEG C. need seldom be exceeded; 200 DEG C., and a jet velocity of 12 fleet per second are specified. The wire grid could be replaced by a pipe or pipes through which a hot fluid may be circulated.
