Abstract

<PICT:0931735/III/1> <PICT:0931735/III/2> Petroleum gas is separated from crude petroleum at elevated pressure by passing the crude petroleum (at 11) into the upper zone of one end of a substantially horizontal vessel (10) fitted with a horizontal baffle (19) extending to a zone in said shell remote from the liquid outlet and maintained at a lower pressure whereby gas separates from said crude petroleum and is withdrawn from a point (13) at or near the other end of the vessel and liquid petroleum is taken off (at 12) from a lower zone at the first said end of the vessel. The numerals relate to the apparatus shown in Fig. 1. In Fig. 3 a modified form of baffle comprises a back plate 22 welded to a plate 23 and is provided with a hole 25 and a shield 26 for equalization of pressure. The hole 25 may be omitted if the welding includes gaps for equalizing pressure. In an example a baffle is built up from long strips welded together so as to provide such gaps. The baffle slopes downwardly at an angle to the horizontal of up to 2 degrees. An inlet 11 is provided with slits 24 backwardly facing to give even flow in the upper zone 20. A plurality of separators may be used in series.
