Abstract

In apparatus for stripping gaseous fission products from a liquid, e.g. effluent cooling liquid from a nuclear reactor, the liquid enters through pipe 13 and descends as a film over former 22, passing up into recess 24 and through openings 21 into discharge tube 2; the openings 21 act <PICT:0793905/III/1> as a weir to maintain a liquid seal in the vessel. Helium or other non-radioactive carrier gas enters through pipe 27, flows concurrently with the liquid film through passage 29 and leaves, together with gas liberated from the liquid, via openings 30, passage 16, and pipe 31 to a detection chamber where the intensity of beta and gamma radiations is measured. The carrier gas may be recirculated after removal of the fission products. Other methods of separating the gases from the liquid are to bubble the carrier gas through the liquid or to spray the liquid into the gas; alternatively the liquid may be boiled to liberate the gas, the vapour of the liquid being condensed or used as the carrier gas.
