Abstract

A non-woven fabric is made by passing a fibre batt (1) around a support roller (2) and needling it with a needle bar (4). The latter reciprocates tangentially to the roller (2) and needles the batt (1) immediately before it passes through tne nip between the support roller (2) and a cooperating presser roll (3). The fibres have improved co-hesion and the fabric has the same resistance to stretch and rupture in both longitudinal and transverse directions. Pref. the needle bar (4) reciprocates in a horizontal plane but to produce more intense needling the needle bar (4) may be reciprocated in a downwardly inclined plane.
