Abstract
Gas flowing upwards through the tower fluidises a packing of spheres pref. of hollow plastic which may be retained between upper and lower sieve or grille plates. Liquid is distributed over these by a plate or pipe network at top, pierced with relatively large holes. Efficient heat or mass transfer between phases occurs in the transient liquid film on the spheres. Forced or induced draught gas circulation may be employed, in the former case the packing automatically regulates gas flow to some extent. Applications include heating or cooling of process liquids esp. water, humidification, air-conditioning and gas soln.
