Abstract
The inlet duct is intended for a diesel engine with direct fuel injection and is contoured to produce optimum rotational movement of air as it enters the cylinder (8). The duct extends (1) from an opening (3) in a side face (4) of the cylinder head (5) and follows a multi-curved path (28) in two planes to a chamber (2) just upstream of the inlet valve seat (9). The chamber narrows down (at 16) towards that seat. The curvatures are such as to produce a whirl in that chamber. The geometry of the duct is defined in detail and the attainable whirl frequency and air through-flow characteristics stated.
