Abstract
A straight bar knitting machine has a knitting bed where the knitting elements (e.g. the needles, the knock-down elements and the sinkers) are mounted on bars, with levers supported to pivot, and connecting rods connecting the levers and the bars, either directly or indirectly, to impart appropriate movements, e.g. advance and withdrawal, or rise and fall to the knitting elements in order to produce a fabric. The levers, for a predominant number of the knitting elements extend from a pivot region into an L-shaped zone, and are connected by connecting rods directly, or indirectly, to a moving bar or bars for forming the fabric, in a zone opposed diagonally to the pivot region, in quadrangular configurations formed by the respective levers and the connecting rods, as seen from the side. The knitting machine is capable of working at higher speeds than were previously possible. The construction is compact, economical and runs well even at standard speeds. The mechanism may be adapted to a double bed knitting machine.
