Abstract

A process for making a dense article from a high-quality metal alloy powder having properties equivalent to or greater than that of a cast article, comprising mixing alloy powder with a dry, finely divided organic binder in amounts not greater than about 5% by weight of the alloy powder, to obtain a uniform dispersion of binder in the alloy powder, then add a solvent for the binder in sufficient quantity to form a plastic mixture with the alloy powder and the binder, then consolidate the plastic mixture to a bulk density intermediate between that of the powder and the cast alloy, then dry the consolidated mixture to evaporate the solvent, then grind the consolidated mixture to form discrete agglomerates of alloy powder particles, then fill a matrix of the desired shape with these agglomerates in the matrix up to at least 50% of the density d of the cast alloy, so that a coherent raw pellet is produced, remove the pellet from the matrix, and then sinter the crude pellet at a temperature between the temperature of the solid and liquid phase of the alloy.
