Abstract

1343365 Graphite granules and bodies formed therefrom LONZA Ltd 14 Feb 1972 [15 April 1971] 6808/72 Heading C1A Graphite granules which are isotopic in respect of their physical properties are obtained by mixing graphite powder of average particle size not more than 100 microns with an amount of binding agent not exceeding 15% by wt. based on the graphite, dispersing this mix in a suitable liquid vehicle, and spray drying the dispersion at a temperature of 50 to 1200‹ C. to remove the volatile components. The binder is preferably present in an amount of 0À1 to 5% by wt. and the continuous phase preferably comprises 20 to 60% by wt. of the dispersion. Other materials producing desired effects on the properties of the product may be added to the dispersion. The vapour produced in the spray drying step may be condensed and recycled to the dispersion forming step as the continuous phase. The graphite particles may be calcined, e.g. at or after formation. The particles may be subjected to a coating process after formation. Massive bodies of graphite may be produced by compressing the granules.
