A method of preparing a compound of the formula **(See formula)** in R1 and R3 with the same or different alcohol groups, each of which has from 2 to 4 carbon atoms, and in which R2 is an alcoholic or alkoxy group having from 1 to 12 carbon atoms, which includes (A) reacting guanidine with a compound of the general formula (II) **(See formula)** where R1, R2 and R3 are as defined above, and where either (a) X and Y taken together represent an additional bond when Z represents (i) the NR4R5 group which is an aliphatic, heterocyclic or aromatic amine group, where R4 and R5 cannot both be hydrogen atoms or (ii) an alkoxy or alcoholyl group; or (b) X is a hydrogen atom when Y and Z individually represent an alkoxy group, or taken together they represent an alcohol-dioxy group: (B) amine a compound of the general formula (III): **(See formula)** where R1, R2 and R3 are as defined above and where Q1 and Q2 either represent both halogen atoms or represent a halogen atom and an amino group; or (C) reacting a compound of formula (IV) **(See formula)** where R1 and R3 are as defined above and where L is a hydrogen atom or an alcoholylthio or aralkohylthio group, such as thiobenzyl, having up to 12 carbon atoms, with an alcoholizing agent of formula R2Q, where R2 is a appropriate alcoholic group and where Q is an atom or reactive group, and then in the case where L is an alcoholylthio or aralkohylthio group, eliminate said group by hydrogenolysis, to form a compound of formula (I), where R2 is a group alkoxy.
