Abstract

A method of manufacturing a synthetic slag composition for continuous casting of steel which comprises preparing a homogeneous mixture of materials containing oxides and fluorides that form a layer of liquid slag substantially smoke-free and chemically and thermally stable in contact with molten steel in a continuous casting mold, said mixture having after melting a fluidity between approximately 5 and 40 cm, a plastic deformation point between approximately 593ºC and approximately 926ºC, an alumina solubility of more than 20% by weight, and said said having mixes, on the basis of the quantity of material worked, a chemical composition of oxides and fluorides that falls substantially within the following ranges; SiO2, from 10% to 55% by weight; CaO, from 0% to 40% by weight; CaF2, from 5% to 40% by weight; Na2O + K2O (one or both) from 5% to 30% by weight; Li2O + LiF (one or both) from 0.5% to 15% by weight; B2O3 from 0 to 30% by weight; B2O3 + CaF2 + LiF greater than 15% by weight.
