Abstract

Compounds of formula and their 4,6-dinitro-8-substituted-amino tautomers, wherein y is hydrogen, chlorine, fluorine, -CF 3 or -CF 2 CF 3 and the group -NR0R1 is. one of many specified secondary or tertiary, optionally cyclic, amino groups, and alkali metal and alkaline earth metal salts thereof, are prepared by reaction of the corresponding chlorobenzimidazole with an amine, followed, if desired, by reaction with an alkali metal alkoxide or alkaline earth metal oxide. 4 - Chloro - 5,7 - dinitro - 2 - trifluoromethyl benzimidazole is prepared by reaction of 3-chloro o-phenylene diamine with trifluoroacetic acid to give 4 - chloro 2 - trifluoromethyl - benzimidazole, followed by nitration. The products of the invention have insecticidal, arachnicidal and nematocidal activity and may be used in pesticidal compositions or incorporated into inks, adhesives, soaps, polymers, cutting oils, oil or latex paints, textiles, cellulosic materials, grain, wood, lumber or seeds.
