Abstract

An aqueous alkaline metal-cleaning solution has a borate as its essential inorganic alkaline constituent and contains 0À1-10 g/l of vanadium ions. The borate may be an alkali metal meta-, tetra- or poly-borate, and the source of vanadium ions may be an alkali metal or NH 4 meta-, ortho- or pyrovanadate, vanadium chloride, sulphate, or nitrate, a vanadyl compound or a vanadium oxide. Preferably a surfactant is added, e.g. a mixture of alkylaryl polyglycol ethers with 2 to 6 and 15 to 50 ethylene oxide groups, and an anionic wetting agent such as an alkylarylsulphonate may be added, the total surfactant content being 1-10 g/l. Al, galvanized steel, zinc and stainless steel are cleaned by immersion in the solution.
