Abstract

For producing crimping therein, multi-filament yarn is pulled, with the filaments substantially flat and parallel, through first contact heater means, the filaments are assembled into a twisted yarn, and the latter is pulled through second contact heater means. Untwisted multi-filament thermoplastic yarns 12, 13 pass from respective spools 10, 11 through pre-twister means 14, such as described in Specification 1007813, and are then led by pulleys 15 and a guide 16 to tensioning means 17, the yarns then passing via a pulley 19 downwards in flat, parallel formation to engagement with the surface of an arcuate groove 31 formed longitudinally in an elongated, vertically-disposed hollow body 30 heated by steam via a pipe 33. From groove 31 the yarns pass through opposed crotches of crossed rollers 81, 82 freely journalled in a fixed support 83, whereby the yarns become progressively assembled into a twisted yarn 18 which passes upwardly into engagement with the surface of a longitudinal groove 32 formed in body 30. The twisted yarn is guided by rollers 42, 43, 43 to a descending direction, the twist being set by cooling, either natural or artificial, at this stage. The crimped component yarns 12, 13 are then separated over fixed pins 61, 62 by traction from pairs of conical rollers 65, 66 and are wound on takeup rollers 73, 74. A tensioner 120 may be inserted between groove 31 and the rollers 81, 82 to increase the tension in the twisted yarn. In a modification only one multi-filament yarn is treated, the pre-twister means 14 and the separating pins 61, 62 then being omitted, and twisting means 121 being located immediately in advance of the relevant traction rollers.
