Abstract

1,239,816. Heating and crimping yarn and fibres. N. J. STODDARD and R. W. STODDARD. 30 July, 1968 [8 Aug., 1967], No: 36220/68. Headings D1D, D1F and D1W. A heater for the continuous heating of running twisted yarns, as may be employed in texturing and crimping by a process which includes false-twisting, comprises a series of yarn heating surfaces, perhaps incorporated in a single heater body, sequentially arranged along the yarn path and twist-propagating means e.g. rotatably mounted annular bodies having an internal diameter slightly less than that of the annular aperture of the heater body and an external diameter slightly larger than the exterior heater surface of the (tubular) body. The propagating means are disposed between heating surfaces to provide a yarn path passing alternately over these surfaces and means. "Twist-propagating" indentifies the sustaining of the twist imparted to the yarn by conventional false-twist means i.e the twist is not disturbed in its uniformity and is not significantly alternated in the heated yarn path dispite repeated contact with path reversing surfaces. The heater body may be square, oval or circular in cross-section. The term "yarn" includes staple and multifilament yarns and filaments, thermoplastic yarn of polymers such as nylons, polyesters and polyolefines and mixtures thereof with each other or with non-thermoplastic yarns, and also yarns rendered functionally thermoplastic by treatment with solutions. In the operation of the apparatus shown, yarn drawn from supply package 12 through pretension device 13 and oscillating guide eye 14 passes without slippage through tensioning apparatus 15 and then, under uniform tension, makes successive passes upwards over the outer surface of heater 51 (as through axial groove 66) then over twist propagating element 60 and downwardly through the central opening in tube 53, around twist-propagating element 61 and again upwardly along outside of heater body 51 (as through grooves 67, 68, 69) the length of the heating path thus being much longer than the length of the heater. Pulley 57 is driven at a rate related to the speed of the primary twisting spindle 17 and rate of yarn advance and carrier supporting tube 53 and elements 60, 61, therewith.
