Abstract

A headbox for delivering liquid slurry has chambers which are closed and isolated from each other, convergently tapering in the downstream direction, and a slice region formed in the headbox having a plurality of slice openings, each opening communicating with one chamber, the openings being so disposed that slurry can be delivered in layers, each supplied from one of the chambers. As shown, headbox 10 has chambers 13, 14 and 15 which may be fed separately from 56, 57 and 58, or which may be fed from a single stock source. The chambers may contain flow spreaders 52, 53, 54, tube banks 49, 50, 51 and flow turbulence generators 46, 47, and 48. The walls 18, 22 and 27 may be pivoted at 21, 26 and 43 respectively and the slope of these walls may be adjusted by rods 41, 37 and 33. Rods 33 and 37 are connected to their respective plates, and pass through others by means of spherical bushings (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown). The headbox may be adapted for use with a cylindertype machine in which a wire passes around a roll (Fig. 2, not shown), the walls 18, 22 and 27 being curved to conform with the roll.
