Abstract

L-Lysine is prepared by culturing under aerobic conditions a hydrocarbon-assimilating micro-organism of the genus Brevibacterium or Arthrobacter that requires methionine for its growth, on a nutrient medium containing at least one hydrocarbon as the main source of carbon and methionine. Specified organisms are Brevibacterium ketoglutamicum ATCC 21297 and Arthrobacter paraffineus ATCC 21298, and the fermentation is normally conducted at a temperature of 20-45 C. and a pH of 6-8. Suitable hydrocarbons are gaseous hydrocarbons, C 10 -C 50 aliphatic hydrocarbons, aromatics and crude petroleum, particularly C 15 -C 18 normal paraffins and kerosene.
