Abstract

A process for the production of dicarboxylic acids comprises subjecting a compound from the group consisting of hydrocarbons having terminal methyl groups, hydrocarbons having terminal methylene groups and oxidised derivatives of said hydrocarbons wherein one terminal group is partially or fully oxidised and another terminal group is unoxidised or partially oxidised, to the action of oxidising enzymes produced by the aerobic growth of a diterminal oxidising strain of a microorganism. Suitable starting materials include aliphatic (saturated or unsaturated), alicyclic or aromatic hydrocarbons, aldehydes, alcohols, monocarboxylic acids and omega-hydroxy carboxylic acids. The process may be effected by aerobically culturing the microorganism in the presence of the substrate or by the use of isolated enzymes. In the former case, the process may be effected during the growth phase or in the stationary phase in a medium deficient in one or more nutrients essential for growth. In one embodiment the microorganism is cultured in the presence of a gaseous hydrocarbon such as methane or propane, natural gas or "liquefied petroleum gas" until a suitable cell population has been attained, allowing remaining gaseous hydrocarbon to escape and adding the hydrocarbon it is desired to oxidise. Specified microorganisms belong to the following genera of class Schizomycetes; Flavobacterium, Mycobacterium, Streptomyces, Nocardia, Brevibacterium and Corynebacterium.
