Abstract

1,270,006. Proteinaceous foods. INSTITUTE OF GAS TECHNOLOGY. 25 July, 1969 [8 Aug., 1968], No. 37590/69. Heading A2B. [Also in Division C6] A proteinaceous feed or food and feed supplement consists of the cells product of a process comprising (1) inoculating in a react- or an aqueous nutrient medium comprising inorganic salts with a culture of a microorganism capable of assimilating methane and of the genus Bacillus, Methanomonas or Psendomonas, preferably Psendomonas sp. ATCC 21,310, Psendomonas methanica or Methanomonas methanica, the medium containing at least 0.005 g/L magnesium ion, at least 0.00025 g/L calcium ion, at least 0.0001 g/L iron ion, a nitrogen source comprising ammonium ions e.g. gaseous ammonia, and/or nitrate ions and having a pH of 6.0-7.5, (2) maintaining the inoculated medium at a temperature of 20‹ to 40‹C, (3) continuously supplying to the inoculated medium gaseous feed containing 3-97 volume per cent oxygen and 1-97 volume per cent methane, whereby the culture propagates by fermentation, (4) withdrawing effluent from the reactor and (5) recovering and drying a portion of the cells from the effluent. The conditions are maintained in log phase growth using several fermenters in series. The withdrawal of effluent and the supply of make-up medium (including effluent liquid and gases) may take place continuously. The following feed gas mixtures may be used, for example, (1) 40 volume % CH 4 , 40% O 2 , 15% N 2 and 5% CO 2 , and (2) a mixture of natural gas and air of specified composition.
