Abstract

1320722 Cultivating micro-organisms on hydrocarbons NORTHERN ILLIONOIS GAS CO 28 July 1970 [9 Sept 1969] 36556/70 Heading C6F The aerobic cultivation of hydrocarbonutilizing micro-organisms on hydrocarbons in a fermenter is carried out such that the total partial pressure of oxygen and the total pressure in the aqueous medium provides (1) a weight ratio of dissolved oxygen to dissolved carbon in the medium up to 5.0 times the stoichiometric weight ratio of the oxygen consumed to the carbon consumed in the fermentation of biomass and (2) the total pressure of the oxygen containing feed gas and the total partial pressure of oxygen provide total dissolved oxygen in the medium of from 1 to 30 ppm, the total pressure being 1 atmosphere absolute or greater. The ratio of dissolved O 2 /C may correspond substantially to that of the ratio of consumed oxygen and carbon. Examples are directed to the cultivation of Pseudomonas methonica ATCC 21, 310 and of a mixed culture ATCC 19, 385, on methane.
