Amino acids are produced by fermentation from hydrocarbons as the main carbon source by culturing a mixture of a first micro-organism and a second microorganism, the former being capable of assimilating hydrocarbons but having an inferior capacity, if any, for producing amino acids compared with the second micro-organism, the second micro-organism being capable of producing amino acids but having an inferior capacity, if any, for assimilating hydrocarbons compared with the first micro-organism, under aerobic conditions in an aqueous nutrient medium containing at least one hydrocarbon, accumulating the amino acid in the resultant culture liquor and recovering said amino acid from said culture liquor. The first microorganism preferably belongs to the genera Pseudomonas, Mycobacterium, Achromobacter, Corynebacterium, Arthrobacter, Brevibacterium and Micrococcus. The second micro-organism may be Micrococcus glutamicus and the fermentation is preferably performed at 20-40‹ C. and a pH of 4À0 to 9À0. In the examples, L-glutamic acid and L-lysine are obtained from a mixture of n-paraffins of 9-18 C atoms or kerosene.
