Abstract

In a steam generator, e.g. of the forced circulation type, the steam generating heating surfaces are supported from an overhead structure comprising longitudinal steel beams 1 resting on transverse steel beams 2 supported on two or more vertical steam and water drums 3 containing fluid at the same temperature and pressure as that flowing internally through tubular elements forming the steam generating heating surfaces. Thus the downward expansion of e.g. the vertical water-cooled combustion chamber 5 is compensated by the upward expansion of the drums 3 so that the point O, e.g., is maintained at a relatively constant vertical position whereby specially designed connections to the generator at this point, e.g. connections for the burners and air supply, are avoided. To permit expansion in the horizontal direction, one drum is fixed and the other is flexibly mounted and supports the beams 2 via a flexible mounting. An air preheater 14 is supported on a base 8 and is connected to a vertical connection part 6 by an expansion-permitting member 15. The steam generator casing can be provided with a steel framework or a framework of water tubes 13.
