Abstract

An apparatus for casting UC fuel elements of elongated annular shape comprises a mould casing 1 closed at its lower end, a thin-walled annular core 6, a further core 7 acting as a heat sink within the core 6 and comprising sectorshaped segments linked together by springs 20 to press the segments against the thin-walled core 6 and allowing core-contraction when the molten UC cools and a plate 4 to seal off the volume within the core. The mould and its core are preferably graphite. After casting the molten UC at 2500 C. the thin-walled core fractures as the cast UC cools and the segments are pressed together. Several moulds may be filled at one time by locating the moulds in and around the periphery of a circular pot and pouring molten UC over a conical distributer member at the centre of the pot into the moulds. The Specification also discloses moulds with cores comprising a solid cylindrical block or a solid rod having thin-walled cylinders therearound which are crushed when the UC in the mould cavity cools.
