Abstract

The belt of a conveyer for material having a bulk density of 0À8 kg./dm.3 or more is supported by troughing idler assemblies which, over at least one-third of the conveying run of the conveyer, measured from the driven end, have a minimum spacing of a = 2À8-(0À4 log e B), a being measured in metres and B being the belt width in metres. The side rollers of the idler assemblies are inclined to the horizontal at an angle of 35 degrees or more. In conveying, for example, ore, coal or gravel over distances such as several kilometres, the conveyed material, together with the steeply inclined side rollers, produces troughing of the belt which is maintained between the widely spaced idler assemblies. In Fig. 1, one roller stand rests on baseplates 6 without further anchorage, while the other stand is firmly mounted in concrete foundations 7. No longitudinal bracing is provided. In Fig. 2 (not shown) arched cover-plates (8) are supported by the stands.
