Abstract
A continuous casting machine of the type in which a co-operating pair of endless sets of articulated mould blocks are driven at the same speed so that over a portion of their run they are in engagement one with the other and define between them a moving mould cavity, has a casing 10 positioned away from the casting and opening towards the mould blocks 11, the casing 10 containing a number of spraying nozzles which are arranged to direct a spray of cooling liquid against the mould blocks 11, and means for providing a reduced pressure within the casing. The mould blocks are cooled during their upward idle run, the casing 10 containing a number of horizontal spraying pipes 13, each having a number of spraying nozzles, each pipe being caused by a deflector 15 to deflect water pouring down the faces of the mould blocks. Air is sucked out of the casing 10 through a pipe 18 and the resulting inrush of air through the space between the mould blocks and the edge of the casing prevents loss of coolant through this space. Water is removed from the casing 10 through a pipe 17. For cooling the mould blocks of horizontal casting machines, the casing 10 is divided into upper and lower chambers, Fig. 5 (not shown), the lower chamber containing the spraying nozzles and the upper chamber the coolant discharge pipe, the two chambers being connected by tubes sealed to and extending through the partition.
