Abstract

The dial of a circular cylinder-and-dial machine is driven through a pair of co-operating wheels 90, 94, the wheel 90 attached to the cylinder support 24 pressing against the wheel 94 mounted in a support 100 attached to the dial and having the fabric produced on the machine passing between the wheles. The wheels are periodically rotated to advance the fabric at the rate at which it is taken up by the take-down mechanism. To prevent the fabric being marked due to the pressure between the wheels on additional drive from the drive shaft 14 is transmitted through shaft 42 and worm 54. The dial shaft 70 is coupled by a spring 74 frictionally and resiliently gripping and slipping about pulleys 56, 72. The two driving mechanisms ensure that the dial is rotated at the correct speed in the register with the cylinder the torque being proportionately spread between the two mechanisms such that the pressure between the two wheels 90, 94 is insufficient to mark the fabric. Alternatively instead of a slipping spring engaging two pulleys to transmit the drive, a chain drive may be connected to a spring loaded pawl housing which through the pawls and springs resilently transmits the drive to the dial.
