An automatic tensioner for a chain or belt transmission comprises a roller or sprocket 11, rotatably mounted on an arm 9 pivoted about a fixed shaft 8, urged against the belt or chain by a tension spring 17 connected to the arm 9 and to the transmission easing, and pawls 29 housed in the easing 5 are spring urged normal to a face 22 of an extension 21 of the arm 9 to engage a toothed rack 23 thereon so that angular movement of the arm 9 against the action of the spring 17 is limited to an amount ensuring that the slack in the belt or chain is kept within a predetermined limit. The four pawls 29 are staggered to give an effective rack pitch less than the geometric tooth pitch of the rack.
