Abstract
A hermetically sealed spark gap device comprises disc - shaped electrodes 1 having slightly spherical convex faces fixed at a minimum separation of 80-150Á with an effective surface area of a diameter at least 30 times said minimum distance, and a coating 5 of a hardened, initially liquid insulating material, e.g. synthetic resin, the device being filled with air or other gas at a pressure not substantially different from atmospheric pressure and the electrodes being of a material, e.g. pure Cu, which does not evolve any substantial amount of gas when discharges occur. A ring 2 of mica projects beyond the edges of the electrodes 1 to decrease the danger of flash-over around the ring, and leads 3 are secured to the electrodes by solder 4. Alternatively, electrodes with integral strip leads extending from the edges may be stamped from sheet material, the edges being bent away from each other (Figs. 2-4, not shown) to decrease the capacitance of the device. A single coating 5 may enclose a plurality of spark gaps (Fig. 5, not shown). The gas filling may be oxygen or hydrogen. The device may be used to protect cathode-ray tubes.
