Abstract

In a glass cathode-ray tube formed of two envelope portions hermetically sealed to one another, a grid of stretched metal wires constituting a post-deflection acceleration or focusing grid is mounted in the tube by having the ends of the wires embedded in the seal between the two portions and extending to the outer surface of the envelope, the outer surface of the seal being coated with a layer of electrically conductive material and a superimposed layer of material of a nature which ensures that the seal is airtight. A focusing and post-deflection-acceleration grid in a colour television tube is composed of stretched wires 4 extending through the seal 6 (but only partly shown as such) of ceramized glass cement, the ends of the wires being cut-off flush with the outer surface 4a, and coated first with a layer 7, formed of colloidal silver and ceramizable glass and having an extension 7a to a contact terminal 8 provided on the faceplate portion of the tube, and thereafter with an hermetically sealing layer of ceramizable glass 9, which may itself be covered by a ribbon 10 of glass fibres. The grid wires may be of stainless steel, whereby their tension increases, due to differential contraction with respect to the envelope glass, upon cooling from the sealing temperature. A grid structure mounted as described above increases the implosion resistance of the tube, and permits the use of a plane of reduced thickness e.g. a plane rectangular faceplate having a thickness 1/25th the length of the diagonal, or a plane circular faceplate having a thickness 1/30th the diameter. The three-gun colour tube of Fig. 4, has a focusing grid 13 connected to a further electrode 112, and a plane faceplate 14 with a peripheral groove 110, whereby the luminescent strips 16 on the faceplate may be produced by a contact printing process the screen is coated with superposed layers of aluminium 17 and porous graphite 18.
