Abstract
Prior to phosphatization in an acid aqueous Mn phosphate solution, iron or steel surfaces are treated with an aqueous suspension of Mn" orthophosphate, preferably at least in part in the form Hureaulite. Pyrophosphates or condensed phosphates may be included in the suspension to reduce settling, the PH being kept high enough to prevent formation of an Mn phosphate coating. Fe orthophosphate or Ca pyrophosphate or both may be added to the suspension, which may contain surface-active agents such as non-ionic surface active agents. Preferably the particle size of the Mn" orthophosphate is such that 90% by weight is less than 3À5 Á and 90% by weight is less than 30Á. Before being treated with the suspension steel articles may be cleaned with an agent comprising: - 25 g/l NaOH 25 g/l Na 2 Si 2 O 5 2À5 g/l dodecylbenzene sulphonate in H 2 O, by immersion for 10 minutes at 95 C., and be pickled in an inhibited sulphuric acid solution.
