Abstract

For the continuous casting of strip metal 5, a graphite mould 4 has cooling plates 1, 2 above and below the wide surfaces of the strip and heated members 11 are provided between the cooling plates and extend parallel to the narrow surfaces at the edge of the continuously or intermittently withdrawn strip 5 to reduce the rate of cooling of the edges so that the strip has a homogeneous structure across its width. The members 11 have passages 13 in which a heating medium, e.g. oil, may flow or alternatively, the members 11 may be formed by graphite side members of the mould in which an electric heating element is placed. The members 11 may be adjustable longitudinally between the plates 1, 2 there are spaces or insulating layers 22 between the plates and members 11. The cooling plates 1, 2, may have the cooling medium flow space divided into separate edge and central flow circuits (Fig. 6, not shown). The mould 4 is pressed against the wall of a vessel containing the molten metal and receives it direct therefrom.
