Abstract

Dead-burned MgO which is treated with oil and used to repair furnace linings has a particle size distribution with a maximum particle size of 15 mm such that 20-50% by weight has a diameter of 0À1-0À5 mm. and at most 10% has a diameter below 0À06 mm. It may be obtained by grinding, sieving out the fine particles, and replacing them with a fraction which is predominantly 0À1-0À5 mm. in size. The added material may be the coarse material from an air separator, waste dust, or a sieved-out component, or mixtures thereof, and preferably has at least 80% of particles 0À06-0À5 mm. in size and at least 50% of particles 0À1-0À5 mm. in size. The component above 0À5 mm. in size (e.g. a 2-6 mm., 5-10 mm. or 10-15 mm. fraction) may be lime-rich (10-20% Ca), e.g. obtained from dolomitic magnesite or from a mixture of dolomite and magnesite, and the component 0À1-0À5 mm. in size may be Fe rich (e.g. up to 8% Fe 2 O 3 ). The amount of oil may be 1%. In the examples, 3 or 4 different fractions are used, and the full particle size distributions from 0-15 mm. are given.
