990,672. Granulating. KENNEDY VAN SAUN MFG & ENG CORPORATION. Jan. 30, 1964 [Feb. 1, 1963], No. 3977/64. Heading B5A. Powdered mineral material, e.g. dolomite, which contains a small percentage (2¢-5%) of an inorganic binder which forms a hydrate, is pelletized by adding water (about 15% by weight) to the material in a mixer 14 to form agglomerated lumps, crushing the lumps thus formed in a crusher 22 and passing the homogenized material through a screw conveyer 24 into a balling cone 26, in which additional water is added. The pellets formed in the cone roll out on to screen 50, the pellets of the required shape passing through the screen into shoot 52 and then into a drying oven 58, whilst the undersized and oversized pellets fall into shoots 54 and 56 respectively and are reintroduced into the crusher or cone. Other powdered mineral material may be the dust from drying or calcining Portland cement mixtures, lime, clay, fly ash or flue dust, and the binders may be dolomite quicklime, dolomite hydrate, high calcium quicklime, high calcium hydrate or other equivalent reactive hydratable calcined material. If the mineral material already contains the required amount of hydratable binder no additional binder need be added.
