Abstract

A heat exchange element comprises two twisted hollow metal rods 1 and 2 having wires 4 constituting fins disposed in planes perpendicular to the axis of the rods and arranged in a spiral path extending longitudinally along the rods. Such an element may be incorporated in various heat exchange assemblies (see Figs. 2-9). The heat exchanger may consist of one (Fig. 2) or a plurality (Fig. 3) of such elements disposed within a tubular casing wherein the wires 4 are arranged to contact both the casing wall and the wires of adjacent elements. As shown, in Fig. 4, a tube 14 containing elements 12a, 12b is disposed concentrically within a casing 18 containing further elements 16 so defining a plurality of fluid flow ducts wherein more than two fluids may exchange heat simultaneously. The spirals of the elements 12a, 12b preferably have opposite pitches. Additional tubes may be arranged either concentrically around the tube 18 (Fig. 6) or be disposed in spaced relationship within the tube 18 (Fig. 5). A tubular casing (30, Fig. 7), e.g. in the form of a coil and carrying two elements (31) may be immersed in a liquid further elements may be attached to the outer casing (Fig. 8). In another embodiment (Fig. 9) a plurality of elements may be attached to a solid heating conducting mass which is immersed in a liquid.
