Abstract
An adjustable mould 10 for casting slabs, billets or blooms comprises side blocks 14, a bottom block 18, a top block 16 raised and lowered by supports 30, a front ingate assembly 24 and a rear block 20 carried by a lifting mechanism 56 and movable by hydraulic or pneumatic cylinders 44 to position the said rear block 20 for the desired length of slab. The rear block 20 is raised out of contact with the bottom block 18 by a spring mounted connecting member 82 to prevent wear on the blocks, the rear block 20 being pushed down into contact with the bottom block 18 by lowering the top block 16 when the rear block 20 is in its desired position. The lifting mechanism moves on a roller 98, or alternatively a spring biased slide, and the cylinders 44 may be replaced by motor driven screw devices. The ingate assembly 24 is arranged to receive a pressure pouring tube 102. The blocks 14, 16, 18, 20 may be made of graphite and the block 20 has a vent block 34 arranged thereon.
