Abstract

In order to eliminate a boundary layer of air between a roller and a web, the surface of the roller is provided with a plurality of substantially circumferential grooves 24 from 0À02 to 0À08 inch wide and at least 0À05 inch deep. The ridges formed between adjacent grooves are from 0À125 to 0À375 inch thick. For a guide roller (14, Fig. 1) the groove width is preferably 0À04 to 0À06 inch, and for a winding drum (12, Fig. 1) 0À02 to 0À04 inch. The depth of the grooves is preferably 0À1 inch. The Specification also specifies the above dimensions in terms of ratios and percentages.
