Abstract

The roof of a ground reservoir for storing liquid methane comprises a thin flat or cambered sheet 12 of aluminium alloy stiffened on the underside by intersecting ribs 13 to which are secured by tie-rods 17 a layer 15 of balsa wood or fibre glass, and the sheet 12 is secured to the underside of the base plates 8 of a plurality of bracket-like support members 6 suspended by rods 5 from a superstructure 1, 2 and on which rest heavy slabs of concrete 10 which serve to provide reaction against internal gas pressure without imposing a downward load on the sheet 12. The ends of girders 1, 2 forming the superstructure are supported by columns (3), Fig. 2 (not shown), and by a concrete bed (4) having an annular trough (14) forming a seal with the downturned peripheral edge of the sheet (12).
