Abstract

888,746. Storing liquefied gases. CALIFORNIA RESEARCH CORPORATION. May 29, 1959 [May 23, 1958], No. 18395/59. Class 8(2). A flat bottomed heat insulated liquefied gas e.g., methane storage tank operating at substantially atmospheric pressure is supported by a plurality of substantially vertical plates 28, Fig. 5, each lying in a plane normal to a line extending from the centre of the tank bottom 10 to its periphery and being secured to a vehicle body e.g., a ship's framing 14, Fig. 6. Further support is afforded by a skirt 27 and the top and bottom of each plate 28 engage in saddles 29, 30, Fig. 15, and are rocked therein by lateral thermal expansion and contraction and by movement caused by rolling of the ship. In a modification the plates 13, Fig. 8, which are of flexible construction are bolted to the framing 14 and are keyed to a wooden block 16 secured to the tank bottom 10. Conventional insulation 15 surrounds the tank 11 and the bottom 10 is internally reinforced by bars 24, 25. Pipe connections are made below a sump well 12.
